Waverley takes stick to Altona

ALTONA’S State League One men’s hockey side succumbed to reigning champions Waverley on Saturday.
Waverley produced one of its best performances of the season to defeat Altona 3-1.
The match started at a very quick pace, with both sides’ forward lines and midfields making speedy runs on angles, cutting through both defences.
Waverley’s defence held out Altona, despite a few chances, and the normally dead-eye Chris Coleman missed a searing penalty corner drag flick by mere centimetres.
Oborn was fantastic making many saves, while O’Loughlin was brilliant on the goal line, saving several searing, high flicks with his stick.
The dam was bound to burst at some stage though, with a sensational shot went past a gallant Oborn, to take the score to 3-1, and to secure the three points for Waverley.
“The result was disappointing, but the endeavour was definitely there from the boys. We have a number of key areas of improvement for coming weeks, including a focus on basics and keeping to our game plan for the entire 70 minutes. It’s not a disaster, but we’re not playing to the level I know the side is capable of,” lamented co-coach Ben Guy.
Altona is at its Grant Reserve home ground against ladder leader Doncaster this Saturday at 3.30pm.
