THE State Government is cracking down on Brimbank’s domestic violence crisis.
The city will get a slice of $420,000 provided to three western suburbs municipalities in a bid to help eliminate violence against women.
The innovative Preventing Violence Against Women in our Community initiative will be piloted in three regions over the next four years, including Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Wyndham council areas.
Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn said violence against women was a serious problem for the West. Mr Finn said the program would be run through local councils and would involve schools, workplaces and sports clubs.
Brimbank has one of the highest reported rates of domestic violence, with a staggering 1300 cases recorded each year between 2007-2009.
Brimbank Police Inspector Michael Grainger last month admitted there had been a recent spike in family violence reports but believed the statistics were due to more victims becoming more confident to report the crime.
Between April 2010 and March this year there were 353 family violence assaults reported in Brimbank, up from 190 the previous year.
