SUPERCROSS champions will be revving into Sunshine when the suburb plays host to Melbourne’s first ever Monster Energy Super X series this year.
Global Action Sports today confirmed the dirt-bike event would be held at the Melbourne Knights Stadium in Sunshine’s Somers St on 22 October.
It will be the first time the series has held an event in the city.
Global Action Sports managing director Michael Porra said he was excited to secure the Sunshine site after four years of negotiations with several venues.
Mr Porra said he was thrilled with the venue and anticipated the event could lure thousands of supercross fans to Sunshine from all across Victoria, estimating it would inject $1.5 million into the area.
“Melbourne Knights Stadium is an intimate venue with fans right on top of the action so the atmosphere will be electric,” Mr Porra said.
“However, with a capacity of just under 9000 I would encourage fans to get in early when tickets go on sale as we expect the event to sell out pretty quickly.”
Mr Porra said supercross had a large Melbourne following.
“We have wanted to bring Super X to Melbourne ever since its inception and I am so please we have finally succeeded,” he said.
“Victoria has a huge fan base for all dirt bike sports and of course sport in general so it’s going to be the perfect place to kick off this year’s series.”
He confirmed that the action would be televised.
The event will also include exhibition races for fans at the track and freestyle demonstrations.
Tickets are on sale from Sunday 14 August with later events to be held in Wollongong, Sydney, the Hunter Valley and Ipswich.
