POLICE have pleaded for drivers to pay attention and be careful on the roads, after recent fatalities in Brimbank and across the state.
Recently, a 73-year-old woman was killed when she was struck by a van while crossing Glengala Rd in Sunshine West.
Police said the 50-year-old driver, who was not speeding, stopped after the accident and was assisting with their investigation.
Another senior citizen died on 24 July, after a car hit him on Ballarat Rd. Police believe the 70-year-old man may have crossed the road against the traffic lights, after ambulance officers discovered his body metres from the car.
Brimbank Highway Patrol Sergeant Rod Stein said police would launch a new program to spread the road safety message to vulnerable people in the area.
A Keilor woman has also been interviewed in relation to the death of two parents from Wollongong, which occurred in Carlton last week.
The husband and wife were killed when crossing Queensberry St, while on a visit to Melbourne to watch an AFL game.
Police said the Keilor woman, who was driving the car which hit the couple, was released pending further inquiries.
So far this month, there have been six collisions resulting in the death of seven pedestrians on Victorian roads, bringing the total pedestrian fatalities for the year to 34.
Road Policing Superintendent Neville Taylor labelled the figure as “alarming” and warned people not to J-walk in traffic.
