BRIMBANK SES is warning residents to batten down the hatches for the wild weather ahead.
Unit Controller Brad Dalgleish said the SES had a “quiet night” last Wednesday, despite parts of Melbourne being rocked by heavy hail, lightning, gale force winds and flash flooding.
Melbourne Airport recorded more than 40mm of rain on Wednesday and the Bureau of Meteorology revealed it was the city’s wettest September day on record since 1955.
But Brimbank SES had just three incidents to attend to on Wednesday night including fallen trees, minor flooding and building damage, including a collapsed wall in Alfrieda St in St Albans.
But Mr Dalgleish warned Brimbank was not out of the storm yet.
“Looking at the long term weather predictions, it’s not looking like it’s going to be a good summer. The storms are becoming more frequent and more severe,” he said.
He said residents could be prepared by regularly checking their roof for broken tiles or mess and cleaning out gutters and drainpipes.
“When there are strong winds, anything outside – trampolines, garden furniture, kids toys – try to bring them undercover. Anything that can be picked up by the wind is going to be a hazard to other people.”
The SES can be contacted on 132 500.
