THE Keilor Little Athletics Centre is involved in a race of a different kind as upgrades to its home track near completion.
Inclement weather delayed the project, which was originally scheduled to be finished for the start of the new season. It is now set for a January completion.
Keilor LAC president Sam Barbuto said the delays could not have been foreseen.
“When they started there was a lot of rain at that time. They were able to get the asphalt down and we agreed we wanted to get everything right the first time,” he said.
“It was a lot of money that was being invested in the track and we wanted to be conservative in the process.
“We have worked really closely with the project team at the council … our relationship with them remains really strong.”
Barbuto said the Moonee Valley Council had been fantastic in their support of the club, which needed a temporary home for the start of the season.
“The athletic community has been really good. As soon as we found out there was a delay we contacted the Moonee Valley City Council,” he said.
“We spoke to them about our situation and then we liaised with the clubs … they have been fantastic and have been very accommodating. They have done everything they possibly could to assist us.”
As completion of the new track nears, community groups are already putting their hands up to be among the first to use it.
“Already I have had calls about it. Not only schools but school districts looking to book the track for next year,” Barbuto said.
