JUST like a jigsaw puzzle, the Burnside Heights Football Club is beginning to come together.
Off-field, the club has officially elected Justin Peagram as the president while another five local community members have signed on to join the inaugural committee.
They will be working closely with four parents who have expressed interest in coaching the junior sides in 2012 as the club builds the foundations for what they hope will be a long and successful history.
“We really needed those roles filled and if we can start the new season with that already then it will be a big bonus that we don’t need to rush around and find people in February or March,” Peagram said.
“We also have had three people put their hands up for team management roles so things are beginning to take shape.”
Excitement in the Burnside Heights community is also beginning to hit fever pitch as students at the Kororoit Creek Primary School throw their support behind the team. “We put it to the kids at the local school that we were going to have a jumper competition and if they would like to enter, to do a jumper design for us,” Peagram said. “We had over 130 kids do that in a week so certainly the local kids at the primary school are very keen.”
Not content with just designing a world-class jumper, the kids also want to write the Burnside Heights club song. That will be the next thing that they will look at for us and that will give us a very close relationship with the school.”
The students who design the best jumpers will be recognised at an awards day later this month. With the support of the school and other residents, the club has 40 juniors signed up for next season in either Auskick or a junior playing capacity. Burnside Heights will meet with representatives of the Essendon District Football League and Western Region Football League this week to make a decision on which league the club will play in next season.
