FOR many Brimbank residents the saying ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’, couldn’t be more true.
Next month residents will be able to swap their unwanted goods at a community day established by the members of the Sunshine Leadership District Program.
The group, made up of 15 adults, completed an eight-week course which looked at the ways they could make a sustainable difference to the community.
Member and long-time Sunshine resident Ilona Lomnicki said the group decided to develop a bartering program to promote social inclusion and promote a no-money market.
Ms Lomnicki said the ‘trade 4 treasure’ event, which will take place in December, would allow people from any social and cultural background to exchange goods.
“It has nothing to do with anyone’s financial situation,” she said.
“It’s about fostering generosity and social unity.”
Ms Lomnicki said the event would nurture community spirit which was imperative to improving the area.
She said that was something the area had never lacked but there was always room for improvement.
“It’s (Brimbank) my home. I take pride in the area and embrace its diversity.”
She said the group hoped to establish regular swap meets and said the leadership program had fostered unity between the council and community members.
The swap meet market will take place on Saturday, 10 December, between 11am to 2pm at West Sunshine Talintyre Reserve.
