THE race for a spot on Wyndham Council has heated up with a former Mayor announcing he will not be standing for re-election.
Councillor John Menegazzo told Star last week that he will no longer be running for the council during the elections in October this year.
“Whilst I originally intended to run, my family circumstances have now changed to the point where my wife and I will be regular overseas travellers over the next few years,” Cr Menegazzo said.
“Obviously it would not be fair on the ratepayers putting yourself up for election if you know you will be out of the country for extended periods of time.”
Cr Menegazzo was elected to represent the Iramoo Ward in 2008 and was Mayor during 2011.
He said he will return as a board member of the Italian Sports Club of Werribee, a position he gave up when he became a councillor and would hopefully join the Committee for Wyndham.
Cr Menegazzo said he was proud of the work the council had achieved during his time on it.
“I think I can go out on a reasonably high note knowing that we’ve done the best we could,” he said.
“We’ve achieved a lot of things that the community don’t see. We’ve actually convinced the State Government to activate the employment precinct which will have huge ramifications for Wyndham.”
