HE’S only two-years-old and already weighs in at 650 kilograms, so giving Jelani the giraffe a pedicure was never going to be an easy task. A team of vets and keepers from the Werribee Open Range Zoo took it all in their stride however and trimmed the overgrown hooves during a routine medical procedure last month. Jelani was anaesthetised while the large team, including University of Melbourne clinicians, worked quickly to complete the various tasks. The young giraffe arrived at Werribee Open Range Zoo in September last year, after a four-day voyage from Auckland. Visitors to the zoo can now watch Jelani show off his new hooves in the African Savannah, along with six other giraffes, rhinos, zebras, antelopes and ostriches. 85055 Picture: SUPPLIED
