THE Western Jets rocketed to one of their best wins of the season on Saturday, defeating the Sandringham Dragons by 33 points in round 15 of the TAC Cup.
Neither side was giving an inch during a hard fought first half with the margin remaining under one goal at both quarter time and half time.
However, after the main break the Jets were able to show their class and during a five goal to none third quarter blew the match wide open.
There was no coming back for the Dragons from there with Western maintaining their level throughout the final term to secure the 14.11 (95) to 8.14 (62) win.
Western Jets’ coach Steve Kretiuk was rapt with his side’s effort in the win, which continues the club’s impressive second half of the season.
“Before the game it was really about wanting to play our brand of footy and trying to play it for four quarters. I thought we had a lot left in the tank from some of our boys after the last few games, like they could have given more,” he said.
“We really put it on the guys to, when you think you’re done, try and go again. We had 23 contributors today.
“We were trying to do our votes and put six in the best but we could have got 10 in there easy. When you’re doing that you’re generally going to win games of footy.”
Up forward, Spencer White again showed why he may be on the radar of some AFL clubs come draft time with the big forward kicking his third bag of five goals for the Jets this season. He was well supported by captain Ashlin Brown who also added four goals.
Around the ground it was Josh Bench who impressed Kretiuk after another outstanding game.
“I think he had over 10 tackles and 20 odd possessions and some really good passages of play. I just hope that people look at him and see what we see,” Kretiuk said.
“We see that he is very dynamic with his ability to play the game. He is quick, he is agile, a good user and he defends and attacks well. Like a (Robin) Nahas, he is that small forward come midfielder that can create a lot of excitement around the contest.”
The win sees the Jets remain in ninth spot on the TAC Cup ladder and with two rounds to go are six points behind the eighth placed Geelong Falcons.
Western will now have a week off before returning to the TAC Cup against Bendigo in round 16.
