A SUNSHINE police officer will hop on his bike in the name of charity later this month.
Acting Sergeant Craig McSwain is one of the thousands of riders who are gearing up to take part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer.
Acting Sgt McSwain will ride his bike for more than 200 kilometres in the annual two-day charity event to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
“Having lost a family member and my mother being diagnosed last year it is very important to me to participate in such a great cause,” Sgt McSwain said.
All riders need to raise a minimum of $2500 to be able to take part in the event and the Caroline Springs resident has already raised more than $3200 for the charity bike ride.
“You realise it’s such a good cause and that everyone has been directly or indirectly affected by it,” he said.
“It is extremely important for me to do everything I can to help fund a cure.”
Sgt McSwain said the long cycling journey would be tough, but it would not be as hard as the daily challenges cancer patients face every day,
“It’s obviously not going to be anything compared to what these guys have to go through,” he said.
The recreational cyclist also said the event was a great opportunity for people to have some fun and get active.
“Cycling leads to a better and healthier lifestyle,” Sgt McSwain said.
“I’m always encouraging people to get involved with personal fitness.”
Sgt McSwain said he wanted to thank everyone that had donated funds and supported his involvement in the charity bike ride.
“I can’t express my gratitude enough for your donations and this will only bring the breakthrough that one step closer,” he said.
The Ride to Conquer Cancer will be held on Saturday 27 October.
