BUDDING sport stars celebrated the official opening of the multi-million dollar Balmoral Park project in Derrimut last week.
The completion of the project was marked by the official launch of a $70,000 public art installation by designer Martin Moore.
The Spiral Graph Seat, which is based on the 1960s Spirograph, is part Brimbank Council’s bid to enhance urban and recreational spaces in the municipality.
The new Balmoral Park sporting pavilion holds up to 200 people for soccer and cricket matches and includes four changerooms, a multi-purpose training facility, community meeting space, car park and eight floodlights.
The sporting ground will become home to the Balmoral Soccer Club and Sunshine Heights Cricket Club.
Chair of Brimbank Administrators Mr John Watson said the Balmoral Park project was an important one for Derrimut and would offer great benefits to the community.
“Derrimut, like much of the West is undergoing a population boom and there’s a pressing need for high quality community and recreational facilities,” Mr Watson said.
“This project has enabled us to put in place high quality, fully accessible facilities and services for community user groups, sporting clubs, spectators and visitors that will meet the needs of the growing district.”
Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor said more than 300 people were expected to use the sporting pavilion each week.
“I know that residents have been very keen to see the installation of the sports lights so they can train and play into the evening,” Mr O’Connor said.
“The Balmoral Park Project was identified as a local priority for this fast growing community and I’m proud to be part of a government that delivers quality community infrastructure like this complex.”
