ALMOST 150 years have passed since local government was first established in Keilor and several events have been planned to celebrate the event.
On 3 March 1863, the Keilor Rd District Board was first established – and this year Brimbank City Council and the Keilor Historical Society will honour the milestone.
Brimbank City Council chairman of administrators John Watson said the events would include a historical exhibition at the Old Shire Hall, Harrick’s Cottage open day and an anniversary dinner at Overnewton Castle.
“Through the exploration of the people, places and organisations who, over the past 150 years have shaped Keilor into the place we know, ‘Keilor 150’ will share the story of ‘A community’s journey’,” Mr Watson said.
“The actual 150 anniversary occurs on the weekend of March 2 and 3, and will be a weekend to remember, with a number of events happening across the weekend.”
Mr Watson said that the Keilor Gift was also set to go off with a bang on Saturday 16 February, with a special firework finale.
“This year, attendees will not only see some great sport, they will also be treated to a sensational firework display, with a Keilor 150 birthday cake firework finale,” he said.
Mr Watson thanked all the people and groups who have organised events for the weekend anniversary celebration, in particular the Keilor Historical Society.
“This is a community event, run for the community by the community, and as such, we’d love to hear about your event ideas that will help everyone celebrate this important milestone,” Mr Watson said.
The Harrick’s Cottage Open Day will be held by the Keilor Historical Society at Harrick’s Cottage, Harrick Rd, Keilor Park on Saturday 2 March between midday and 4pm. Afternoon tea is provided and entry is via a donation of a gold coin.
