NEW images of the future Sunshine Railway Station emerged last week as an advocacy group urged the state and federal governments to invest more in the West’s transport services.
The Sunshine station upgrade is part of the $4.3 billion Regional Rail Link project.
A digital animation film-clip, posted on Youtube by the Victorian Department of Transport last week, showed how the completed Sunshine Train Station would look.
The video showed a new pedestrian overpass, reconfigured bus interchange and a new ticket office.
The new station is also set to include more Myki ticket readers and increased CCTV coverage at the station and its bus area.
Advoacy group LeadWest has praised the RRL project but urged the State and Federal Governments to invest more funds in improving public transport across the West.
LeadWest last year developed the Western Transport Strategy in conjunction with seven western suburban councils, to demonstrate the scale of projects needed in the area.
The report said by 2026, the West would be home to a population around the size of Adelaide and need a “regionally connected mass public transport network” to cope with commuter demand.
The LeadWest study said the West already suffered from a “low public transport service level” and required four to six services operating every hour of the day.
According to the report: “Melton line stations like Deer Park have an average 30 minute AM peak period service to the CBD and services every two hours during the day.
“Melton Line stations are the worst served in Melbourne for their distance from the CBD.
“Most bus services in Werribee, St Albans, and Watergardens operate at best 40 minute headways on weekdays.
“Overall, daytime service levels across the region are unattractively low every day of the week.”
