A PROPOSAL to keep 120 pigeons at a Delahey address has caused a flap among nearby residents.
Brimbank City Council has received a planning application to keep up to 120 pigeons at 22 Shakespeare Dve.
The council’s acting general manager of city development, Stuart Menzies, said 20 objections had been lodged against the pigeon proposal.
“The main grounds of objection relate to hygiene, odour, vermin and amenity,” Mr Menzies said.
The land at 22 Shakespeare Dve is presently vacant and undeveloped, and is not home to any birds.
Mr Menzies said Shakespeare Dve is located within a Residential 1 Zone, meaning the owners or occupiers of the property are required to seek permission to develop a premises for animals, such as pigeons.
“The Brimbank Planning Scheme requires a permit to use and develop land within a Residential 1 Zone for animal husbandry, which is defined as, ‘Land used to keep, breed, board, or train animals, including birds’,” Mr Menzies said.
“On a site where there is an existing house, the owners or occupiers could apply for a permit under Council’s Local Law to keep up to 10 non-racing pigeons or up to 60 racing pigeons.
“To keep more birds than this, they would need to apply for a planning permit for animal husbandry.”
