GOOD Friday football has be hailed as a huge success in the Western Region Football League after a crowd of around 3000 people turned out to watch St Albans take on Hoppers Crossing. In what was a closely contested match throughout, Hoppers Crossing secured the win by 16 points with Kade Carey leading from the front with four goals.
For St Albans, the returning Aaron Henneman also kicked four goals while Daniel McKerracher kicked three in the 16.13 (109) to 14.9 (93) loss.
St Albans president Vern Ryan said it was a great day for WRFL football.
“It went over really well,” Ryan said.
“I think the WRFL was very impressed. It was a new concept for the league and we really wanted to take the initiative and make it a great day for everyone and I think that is what happened.
“It was a great game, unfortunately we lost but we had a great night and it was a great contest and a very good standard of football.”
Both the WRFL and the Essendon District Football League now play football on Good Friday, with Keilor and Strathmore squaring off in the latter.
Ryan said the match would become a traditional fixture between St Albans and Hoppers Crossing. “Bob Tregear (WRFL CEO) said that you guys have taken the initiative and for us to really go for it so we look forward to building on it in the future,” he said.
“We are very pleased to be involved in this with Hoppers Crossing. They are a great club.”
