WYNDHAMVALE’S Majak Daw made his own slice of history on the weekend when he made his AFL debut for North Melbourne.
Daw is the first Sudanese person to play AFL and was drafted by the Kangaroos in 2010.
It didn’t take long for the excitement machine to get the crowd cheering, with the mobile ruckman taking a contested mark and kicking a goal within the first minute of the match.
However, the fairytale was cut short though when the 22-year-old was subbed out of the game at quarter time after being knocked out.
He finished the match with two kicks, one handball, two marks and a goal from his 19 minutes of playing time.
Speaking about his selection last week, Daw said he was rapt to have the opportunity to play AFL.
“It hasn’t quite sunk in yet,” Daw said. “I am really excited. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for a long time. I’ve worked really hard at my time at this footy club and I know what it takes now to represent this team.
“I have worked pretty hard for the last three years.”
North Melbourne head coach Brad Scott said he was also excited to see Daw debut.
“I think it is a great news story,” Scott said.
“Maj (Majak) has been really pushing hard for this opportunity for a long time.
“The opportunity has come up for Majak to make his debut, which we are really excited about.
“He has been making the ball really strongly and has worked extremely hard for this opportunity and now he gets the opportunity to go out and play.”
