THE wonders of science feature in a massive mural being created by Albion painter Robert Jackson.
Once finished, the 20-metre long artwork will be installed in the new science building at St Albans Secondary College.
Mr Jackson said he had been working on the mural for the past six months at the Keilor Art Shed, as part of Brimbank City Council’s Art Spaces Project.
Mr Jackson said he wanted to include the universe, Earth, evolution and atoms in the mural which will be made of up of 64 boards.
“I have enjoyed everything really, it has been great. I have done a lot of research and reading and it was all very interesting because I had to learn a lot about science and I’ve had to think about how to represent abstract ideas in a physical form,” he said.
“There are not many schools around who are progressive and enlightened enough to commission original artworks, and to allow an artist free rein.”
Although a talented painter, Mr Jackson described himself as “mostly actually a musician”.
He studied classical composition at the Victorian College of the Arts and belongs to a band called the Legless Lizards.
Mr Jackson encouraged other residents to submit expressions of interest to take part in the Art Spaces Project.
The program aims to promote arts in the municipality, by providing affordable work spaces for artists living and working in Brimbank.
“The thing about this area is, very much up until recently, there have been no music venues, no galleries, no performance spaces – so it’s great the council has taken the initiative to find these places, because there are plenty of artists here and there will be plenty more,” Mr Jackson said.
