BRIMBANK artist Peter Cave has an exhibition ’Landscapes and Seascapes’ showing in Sunshine.
The paintings in the exhibition portray the Victorian landscape along the Great Ocean Road, from Torquay to Apollo Bay.
Mr Cave says he feels an affinity with the places he paints because of his connection to the areas.
“My whole family lives in Ballarat, but my parents live by the sea,” he said.
Mr Cave has been painting for more than 40 years after going to his first arts lesson when he was 16.
“I couldn’t afford many oil paints, so the best way to do it was to cut the tube in half and use all the paint,” Mr Cave said.
Now Mr Cave has an array of paints to choose from, but he makes sure he never wastes materials.
“My mother was a great inspiration for me. She said you should never waste oil paints and she always encouraged me,” he said.
Mr Cave first got started by displaying his paintings in cafes and milk bars.
“I used to go into milk bars and ask, ’Can you help me out, and show my painting in your shop?’”
After selling his first painting at 17, Mr Cave continued to study at art classes in Footscray and Williamstown.
The exhibition is on at Sunshine Art Spaces Gallery until June 30, on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 3-6pm.
