Lions rip in

By LIAM TWOMEY

DEER Park continued its unbeaten run through the Western Region Football League Division 1 competition with Yarraville Seddon the latest victim.
It was an impressive four quarter effort from the Lions, with the star-studded line-up quickly forcing its way on top in the contest and remaining there throughout the afternoon.
The 20.17 (137) to 6.11 (47) win was the 11th in a row for Deer Park and sees the club remain two games clear on top of the ladder.
The result means Yarraville remains in ninth place with a 2-9 win/loss record for the club’s first season in the competition’s top division.
This week will see Deer Park take on Sunshine while Yarraville is set to take Port Melbourne Colts.
Elsewhere in the WRFL, Sunshine accounted for the struggling North Footscray by 131 points.
In what looked like a lopsided match on paper, the Kangaroos wasted no time getting on top in the contest with six opening quarter goals hoping to set the tone for what would be a dominant day.
There was no slowing up after the good start either as the margin continued to grow during the next three quarters.
A five goal to none last quarter capped off the impressive 24.21 (165) to 5.4 (34) win.
Patrick Wiggins was at his best on the Kangaroos’ forward line, booting a bag of seven goals to continue what has been an impressive season.
Wiggins has now kicked 40 goals for the season as well as being named in his club’s best players on five occasions.
He was well supported on Saturday by Chris Tripodi and Tom Millar who kicked four goals each.
Around the ground, Russell Douglas was also impressive.
For North Footscray, Patrick Jackson was the Devils’ only multiple goal scorer with two.
The weekend’s result has Sunshine maintain its place in outright fourth on the WRFL ladder with an 11-8 win/loss record for the season.
North Footscray’s position also remains unchanged with the Devils in last spot and still searching for their first win.
When round 12 gets underway this weekend, Sunshine will take on competition front runners Deer Park in what is quickly becoming the WRFL’s toughest task and North Footscray will meet Altona.
Other Division 1 results saw Altona defeat Albion, Spotswood got the better of Hoppers Crossing and St Albans beat Port Melbourne.
