BRIMBANK City Council has been named as one of six finalists for a major environmental award.
The council has been announced as a contender in the 2013 Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Sustainable City of the Year award.
The category recognises councils which demonstrate a commitment to all facets of sustainability, cleanliness and general city presentation.
Brimbank City Council has also been recognised as a finalist in four other sections of the 2013 Keep Australia Beautiful state awards.
The Eco-living Centre in Albion is up for a gong in the Community/Government Partnerships category.
Interpretive signage installed along Kororoit Creek has won the council a spot in the Cultural Heritage finals.
A program called ‘Collection and Genetic Rescue of the Arching Flax Lily’ will compete in the Protection of the Environment category.
The council has also been nominated four times for the Pam Keating Environmental Sustainability Award for its stormwater harvesting, water sensitive design, Green Sports program and replacement computer program.
The 2013 Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria awards, now in their ninth year, honour councils which can demonstrate achievements in 10 categories, including active schools, litter prevention, community action, cultural heritage, resource recovery and waste management.
Brimbank was also recognised as an environmental leader last year after receiving the Premier’s Sustainability Award for Local Government for the ‘Be a Brimbank Gem’ program.
The winner of the 2013 Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Sustainable City of the Year award will be announced on 26 July by the Minister for the Environment Ryan Smith.
The winner will represent Victoria at the national awards in November.
