Spurs go out fighting

VU St Albans Spurs’ VWFL Premier Division season ended with a fighting effort against Melbourne University at Kings Park Reserve on Sunday.
With the game deadlocked at two goals each at half-time, the Mugars ran out to a 9.14 (68) to 3.3 (21) win.
A stunning left-foot snap deep in the forward pocket from forward Candice Robson had the home side in the ascendancy by the opening break.
The Spurs kicked with a strong, swirling wind to start with, and took some advantage from it.
The second quarter had the Mugars kicking with the wind, but St Albans had them accounted for the majority of it.
With the game in the balance and against the wind, Melbourne Uni added three goals to the scoreboard to snuff out the St Albans challenge.
The Mugars changed the game with a performance looking like near their best, being willing to run the ball while St Albans looked to utilise their forwards quickly with long kicks.
Melbourne Uni swamped St Albans with their run against the win, using the ball smartly in tough conditions.
Determined to finish in the best possible manner, it was clear St Albans didn’t have enough to match the young Mugars despite their best defensive efforts. The Mugars’ Lauren Spark kick started the strong finish with a goal early in the last quarter, and her side would not give up their lead.
Gemma Anderson, Emma Kearney and Angelica Gogos stood out for the visitors, while Tayla Dinuccio, Rachel Gullo and Danni Teasdale were among the best for the home side.
The result concludes St Albans’ season, while Melbourne University sits in third spot and is likely to be there in the last weeks of the upcoming finals series.
Earlier in the day, Melbourne Uni saw off St Albans to build momentum heading into their upcoming finals campaign, running out 9.17 (61) to 1.0 (6) winners.
