Woman glassed

A WOMAN sustained serious facial injuries after she was allegedly glassed at a Sunshine hotel on 13 July.
Just after 2am on the Saturday, police and Ambulance Victoria crews attended the premises in Durham Rd.
Maribyrnong police Inspector Tony Long, who was overseeing the north-west metropolitan region on the evening the alleged assault occurred, said the victim was a Sunshine woman aged in her mid-forties.
The alleged offender was a male Sunshine resident also aged in his mid-forties.
Insp Long said police believe alcohol could have played a part in the alleged assault.
He said the alleged ‘glassing’ happened inside the hotel and the alleged offender was interviewed by police at the scene.
The victim taken to Sunshine Hospital with lacerations to her face.
Insp Long described the alleged event as a “serious assault” which caused “very serious facial injuries” to the woman.
Insp Long said the Brimbank CIU was investigating the incident.
Insp Long said the last major glassing incident he recalled in the area occurred in April this year, at a Maribyrnong licensed premises.
A 29-year-old Melton West carpenter was glassed while celebrating his engagement, leaving him with 25 stitches in his face.
Police charged a Burnside man, 24, with intentionally causing serious injury, affray, assault with a weapon and other assault related charges over the incident.
Another Burnside man, 25, was charged with intentionally cause injury, affray and assault with a weapon.
“Assaults do happen in licensed premises occasionally but we work hard with and closely with venues so that we can, a) control those areas, and b) work with licensees to make premises as safe as possible and help ensure patrons – and should do this when they go out to – to not drink to excess and to avoid steps this occurring,” Insp Long said.
He also said most venues obeyed the law and ejected intoxicated patrons before they caused any trouble.
