DEER Park inflicted more pain on the winless North Footscray, defeating the Devils by 259 points on Saturday. In a battle between first and last on the ladder, the Lions were in cruise control throughout, booting eight goals in the opening quarter to break out to a 49 point lead.
If the Devils thought that was bad, the score line only got worse as an 11 goal-to-one second term saw the margin grow to over 100 points at the long break.
Deer Park continued the onslaught at the resumption of play, kicking 23 goals in the second half to seal the 42.19 (271) to 1.6 (12) win.
In total, 12 Lions kicked goals in the win with Kwame Mcharg’s bag of 12 and Cameron Trewin’s haul of eight the highlights.
Around the ground, there was no stopping Chris Stewart who was named Deer Park’s best player for the day.
For North Footscray, Sam Kater worked hard in tough conditions, kicking his club’s only goal and being named the Devils’ best player.
The result sees Deer Park remain on top of the Division One ladder with an impressive 14-1 win/loss record for the season.
The Lions only loss came at the hands of Sunshine earlier this month.
When round 16 gets underway this week, Deer Park will take on second-placed Spotswood in a blockbuster encounter.
For North Footscray, the club will continue its search for its first win of the year against Port Melbourne.
Elsewhere in the WRFL, Sunshine defeated St Albans by 36 points.
The Kangaroos didn’t have things all their own way though and went into quarter time trailing the Saints by six points.
However, that was the last time St Albans saw the lead as an eight goal-to-one second quarter blew the game open.
The 17.11 (113) to 10.17 (77) win keeps Sunshine in the hunt for a spot in the division one top three come seasons end.
The Kangaroos are currently in fourth spot.
For St Albans, the Saints are locked in a battle with Hoppers Crossing for the final spot in September.
In other division one results, Port Melbourne defeated Albion, Altona got the better of Hoppers Crossing and Spotswood beat Yarraville.
