POLICE are searching for the owner of some medals and coins found in Sunshine West, after a good Samaritan handed the lost property over to them.
Senior Constable Luke Bristow from Caroline Springs Police Station said the items were handed in on 16 July and police have been unable to locate whoever misplaced them.
Sen Const Bristow said the money collection included around 20 coins of different currencies, with some dating back to the early 1900s.
The coins and medals were found in a plastic bag on a Sunshine West avenue.
Sen Const Bristow said, unlike mobile phones, police did not often have historical coins or medals handed in as lost property.
He praised the resident who dropped them into the Caroline Springs Police Station and described the woman as a “good hearted person”.
“She stated that if it (the medals and coins) got returned to her – as lost property unclaimed after three months is returned to the finder if they want it – she would try to return it herself,” he said.
Sen Const Bristow said the coins and medals appeared to be of “sentimental value”, which is why police were keen to track down their owner.
He said one of the highlights of being a police officer was reuniting people with their misplaced treasured possessions.
“If it’s something that is valuable to them, I am very happy and proud that I have done my job and returned their property to them, especially seeing their face when you hand it back to them,” he said.
Sen Const Bristow said if anyone believed they owned the medals and coins, they should contact Caroline Springs Police Station.
“If someone thinks the property is theirs, they should contact Caroline Springs on 9361 4700. I am the first point of contact, but if I am not here, anyone at station,” he said.
