Sort through the change

In the Doghouse

FOOTBALL in the West is changing, as I have reflected in recent weeks. The Bulldogs will have their own VFL team as will Williamstown. This will have a big impact on the local competitions with more players being needed at that level, as well as at a local level with the Tarneit Football Club coming into the WRFL senior competition next year. I do wonder where all these players are going to come from and what the standard will be. But that is a different story. Last weekend Werribee played in the old 1993 Big W jumpers and they looked sensational. I am all for the club reverting to that jumper, not only for the rest of the season, but for ever and a day. That jumper says so much about the club, the city, the history, and the people involved at Avalon Airport Oval it deserves to be the future, not just the past. Please let me know your thoughts as I know the club is keen to get as much feedback as possible.

THE FIDA footy program is one of the best new programs in the football world. I am a big fan of participation at every level and FIDA is an integral area. My mate Steve Thom has been doing some coaching and umpiring at West Footscray and loves it and has really enjoyed the experience. The Wyndham all abilities football and cricket club is already celebrating after winning their way through to a grand final this Sunday at Central Reserve in Glen Waverley. The team is coached by Paul Barrett and is run by a very loyal team of volunteers who get a big kick out of being involved. Good luck to them for this Sunday but congratulations on having a go.

BRAYBROOK Football Club might be finished on the field for 2013 but they are continuing to kick goals in the community. Sunday 25 August at Pennell Reserve they are running a “Kick for a Cure for Cancer” day. The day will have numerous activities including a sausage sizzle, face painting, a jumping castle, raffles and plenty of footy competitions. The main feature though will be a game between past and present players of the Brookers. Proceeds from the day will go to the Peter Mac Foundation. Some clubs are already looking towards 2014 and they might like to check out what local player Jimmy Nardella and a few are putting together with their First Class Training Camps for the 2014 pre season. They have a Facebook page with details of what they have to offer at Myrniong. You can contact them via email firstclasstrasining@hotmail.com

MIKE Sheehan returned to Werribee last week to attend the Werribee Football Club president’s lunch and past-players day. Mike played in the inaugural under-19 team back in 1965 when the club started in the VFA. His father Roy was one of the driving forces behind the formation of the VFA club. Mike ran into many old friends and girlfriends and really enjoyed the day. He is currently seen on the Fox Footy channel as a panellist on “On the Couch” and hosting ‘Open Mike’. He is working on getting the Tigers senior coach Scott West on ‘Open Mike’ in the coming weeks. Another ex-Bulldog Shane Birss played a major role for West Adelaide in their FoxTel Cup win last week. Shane was very popular in his days at the Whitten Oval and also played 57 games for Werribee during that stint.

WERRIBEE Centrals veteran Roland Beck chalked up his 300th game recently, which is a great milestone and Williamstown football legend John Martin turned 80 recently and is celebrating at the club this Sunday.
