TWO Sunshine police officers are fighting back against cancer by helping raise money and awareness for cancer at a new fund-raising event this October.
Sergeant Craig McSwain and Constable Shane Weatherley are taking part in the Tour de Fight BaCC ride to fight breast and children’s cancer.
The first year of this event will see 14 riders take part in a seven-day , 905 kilometre bike ride from Adelaide to Shepparton between 5 -11 October.
The event was organised by Constable Weatherley’s father in support of the countless women, children and their families who have been affected by cancer.
Constable Weatherley’s mother and sister both lost their battle to cancer, marking this as a very important event for the family.
“If we can raise a little bit of money to help someone’s mum not pass away or allow someone to get to know one’s sister, that’s important,” Constable Weatherley said.
Constable Weatherley said he looked forward to meeting the other riders and town locals and hearing their stories.
Sergeant McSwain said he was keen to participate in the event when he heard Shane’s story and in support of his close friend, who is also battling cancer.
“We all know someone who has either been directly or indirectly affected by cancer,” Sergeant McSwain said.
“Every cent we raise is one step closer to a cure which will hopefully produce better care and treatment for sufferers and their families,” he said.
“We would gain great satisfaction knowing that one small contribution can make a difference in advancing cancer research.”
So far there has been $ 47,262 raised, almost half of the $100,000 target.
The funds will be divided between three charities which include: the Children’s Cancer Centre Foundation, Jane McGrath Foundation and Challenge – Supporting Kids with Cancer.
