MORE than 300 people flocked to the 2013 Sunshine Short Film Festival at Village Cinemas last Wednesday night.
The Sunshine Business Association’s annual festival, proudly sponsored by Star Newspapers, featured 20 short movies.
The films all centred on the theme ’Sunshine Rising’.
In the competition’s school section, a spoof of Korean pop-star Psy’s ’Gangnam Style’ song had the audience laughing at lyrics featuring late trains, a dismissed council, Sunshine Charcoal Chicken and delicious-looking Pho.
The video, ’Rising Sunshine Style’ directed by Robert Au, won the school’s category.
A delightful stop-animation movie titled ’Bird 2’, following the adventures of a hungry cockatoo at the Sunshine train station, received second place.
The film was made by the talented Zakanj family, consisting of parents Rebecca and Robert, plus children Thomas, Mary, Jessica, Holley and Lilly.
Second runner-up in the school’s section was ’The Teleporter’ directed by Orlando Catoggio.
The clip followed young Orlando and Jim as they tested out a machine which took them into video games and movies.
In the SSFF’s open category, director Michael Sandic took the first prize, with film noir thriller ’Sunny City’ about a man who cannot bring himself to assassinate a golden retriever.
First runner-up was ’I Love Chickens’ directed by Jessica Gerger, second runner-up was ’Sight’ directed by Michael Chandra and third runner-up was ’Noise in Sunshine’ from director Thomas Jose Field.
The mobile category was won by ’Tofu Man’ directed by Andrew Robb and ’Found but Lost’ from Ben Trillado and Selina Heeps placed second.
Next year’s SSFF will be held in October with all movies featuring a Halloween theme.
