VICTORIA University’s inaugural Todd Blake Student Award winner was officially announced at the university’s 20th Annual Tourism, Hospitality and Events Expo last week.
The award, which is in memory of Victoria University alumni Todd Blake, was granted to Tessa McLachlan.
Tessa, a Bachelor of Business graduate who majored in Tourism and Event Management, won the award for her exceptional work in the industry.
Tessa said she was passionate about the potential of the Victorian industry and was determined to help shape its future success.
“It’s an honour to receive this award, and I strongly encourage every future student to apply,” she said.
“It’s a great opportunity and it reinforces the importance of the young tourism workforce.”
Tessa showed a great amount of passion and commitment working with and representing Tourism Victoria in Media and Trade Relations, said judges.
Tessa has also won the cash prize of $500 and will have the opportunity to be mentored by Natalie O’Brien, CEO of the Melbourne International Food and Wine Festival and Dianne Smith, CEO of the Victoria Tourism Industry Council.
Tessa, who is currently undertaking a two‐month position in Borneo at the Sepilok Orang‐utan Sanctuary, said her true passion was in Eco-Tourism.
The award is a legacy project to Mr Blake who tragically passed away in August 2011.
It was established by Victoria University, together with Mr Blake’s employer Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Victoria Tourism Industry Council, where he was Chief Executive.
The Award is open to VU students in Hospitality, Tourism and Events programs who displayed the same passion, commitment, leadership, and can-do attitude as Mr Blake.
