AN EXHIBITION documenting the Sunshine railway station redevelopment will be shown until 29 September.
West Footscray resident Brad Axiak, who is artist-in-residence at the Sunshine Art Spaces studio, has created the project of still imagery and video projection called OLD Ground.
The exhibition has been described as a “raw visual experience into the rumble of progress” which shows “the shifting, scraping, thumping, digging and cutting” at the Sunshine train hub.
Mr Axiak changed careers to become an artist after he joined the the Royal Australian Navy at 19, as an aircraft maintenance engineer.
Two years later, he graduated from the RAAF Technical School in Wagga Wagga and was posted to New South Wales.
Mr Axiak was given ship postings between 2001 and 2003, which included peacekeeping duties in the Solomon Islands and two tours to the Persian Gulf.
After a defence colleague read some of Brad’s work, he urged him to pursue a creative education.
Mr Axiak went on to study writing and photography, and one his images has since been featured in Verandah 23, a photographic series published on the ‘Outsiders Guide to Melbourne’ website.
He has also contributed to G’day India magazine as a writer and photographer.
Mr Axiak said his ideal career would involve travelling Australia, documenting both people and the landscape.
