SEVERAL students from Sunshine North Primary School were jumping for joy when they succeeded in a sports competition recently.
The school held the Sunny North Skipping Champions for 2013, with pupils from Prep through to Grade 6 taking part in the annual event.
Skipping Australia, which formed in 1984, promotes rope skipping as great exercise for young people with benefits including improved cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength, better endurance, greater flexibility, improved co-ordination and balance, fun and increased social skills.
At this year’s Sunny North Skipping Champions, male and female students received trophies and medals at the levels of Prep, Grade 1/2, Grade 3/4 and Grade 5/6.
The Grade 5/6 boy’s champion, Kuol, beat his classmates in the skipping contest.
The 12-year-old skipped longer than all the other pupils to claim the title, with a time of 8.52 minutes.
“I like skipping,” Kuol said.
“It’s fun and it’s good exercise.
“I just do it at home for fun.
“I kind of knew I was going to win – I was guessing though.
“I wasn’t tired at the end.”
Young Kuol said although he liked skipping, football was his favourite sport.
“I go for Richmond,” he said.
“I would like to play football when I finish school – I like the mid-field.”
The Grade 5/6 girls skipping champion was Ruthanne.
