A YOUNG child died after she was run over in a driveway in Sunshine West last Tuesday.
The three-year-old girl was seriously injured and sustained head injuries after she was hit by a car driven by a relative, in Armour St.
The girl was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital by ambulance in a critical condition, but later passed away.
Police have investigated the incident and interviewed the driver, but last week said they expected not to lay any charges.
Last year, the Coroner’s Court conducted an inquest into the death of a Hillside boy who died after being hit by a car in his home’s driveway.
The Coroner’s Prevention Unit said between January 2000 and September 2012, 14 children in Victoria suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a vehicle in a driveway, seven of whom died.
In the same period, 73 children were admitted to the Royal Children’s Hospital with non-fatal injuries after being involved in driveway accidents.
In 2010, the State Government launched an awareness campaign to raise awareness of driveway safety around small children.
