HOMICIDE detectives have launched an investigation into the death of a baby found near a footpath in St Albans last Thursday.
Police were called to Ruth St about 3pm where the newborn infant’s body was located by authorities, after they were contacted by a family member.
Police who attended the scene discovered the baby’s body concealed under a tree close to the pavement.
As Star went to press, the exact details surrounding the baby’s death were yet to be determined.
“Inquiries are continuing into how long the deceased child may have been there and the circumstances under which it was placed there,” a statement from Victoria Police said.
An 18-year-old St Albans woman has been interviewed by police and released pending further inquiries.
Police said they were “not looking for anyone else suspected of being involved”.
Police remained at Ruth St for several hours but as of Friday morning, had not yet released information concerning the baby’s exact age or gender to the pubic.
A post-mortem was also carried out on the baby’s body.
Investigators said they were keen to hear from anyone who witnessed unusual activity in the Ruth St area over the past week.
