Footpath injury

A DELAHEY resident has slammed Brimbank City Council after she was injured on an unsigned works area.
The resident, known as Vicky, said the council’s construction of a new footpath on Taylors Rd had resulted in deep ditches on either side of the new concrete.
She claimed workers had not put up tape, signs or flag around the site, making it a safety hazard.
She said her fears were confirmed last weekend when she broke her toe.
“I was seeing friends off and I slipped, I got caught in this ditch. There were no flags, nothing up. Of a night-time it’s dangerous ,” Vicky said.
Doctors have told her she will need surgery to remove concrete which has entered her bloodstream where the skin broke during the injury.
Vicky said she thought the new footpath, which is part of the widening of the road, was a “brilliant” project, but was angered workers on the project had not put up safety barriers or warnings that would be visible at night.
Council’s General Manager of Infrastructure and Environment Paul Younis said the footpath works were being undertaken by a contractor.
“There are guidelines that should be followed by contractors to ensure the safety of residents and road users when capital works are taking place in the municipality,” Mr Younis said.
“We carry out regular checks on safety works and will continue to monitor the project.”
He said council had not been contacted by Vicky but said council would welcome an “assessment of the cause of the incident”.
Vicky said she was in the process of contacting council as Star went to print.
