ST ALBANS’ Emma McDonell would like to see a more active and engaged Brimbank.
That’s why she’s decided to hold classes teaching people about how to engage with government.
The classes will cover how to find and understand information about the basis of law, the three tiers of government and government departments.
After finishing a double degree in law and international relations at LaTrobe University last year, Emma felt “empowered” by the knowledge and skills she had acquired.
“Because I have that knowledge I never feel under pressure, I never feel stressed about it and I feel like I can handle anything that happens,” Emma said.
“I just wanted to be able to share that and for other people to have that as well.”
Emma said she had noticed a lack of “civic literacy” and understanding of the responsibilities of council, State Government and Federal Government, which often left residents feeling frustrated and helpless.
“I’m not running any agenda I’m just interested in having a space where people can learn more,” she said.
The classes will run over two sessions, with nine spots available in each on each Saturday from 21 April to 12 May at the Delahey Community Centre.
