Check ID, police urge drivers

By NATALIE GALLENTI
SUNSHINE motorists were taken for a ride last week by a 19-year-old man pretending to be a police officer in an unmarked white Holden.
Police allege that the man had activated emergency lights on his vehicle to intercept a
motorist and cyclists in Sunshine North and Sunshine West last Wednesday.
Two cyclists and a female motorist were stopped during the incidents. They reported the matter to police after they noticed P-plates on the vehicle.
Brimbank police apprehended and questioned the man last Thursday. He is expected to be charged on summons with impersonating a police officer.
Sen Det Paul Ziebell said emergency lights were easily accessible online and motorists should always sight identification when stopped by officers.
Sen Det Ziebell said the matter was being taken seriously by Victoria Police.
“We want people to trust police and we do intercept vehicles, sometimes in unmarked cars, but identification should always be shown,” he said.
