A BEST-on-ground performance from Karen Paxman lifted VU St Albans to a crushing 44-point victory over Scoresby in the Victorian Women’s Football League on Saturday.
The Spurs wasted little time taking control of the match after the opening bounce, booting 4.4 in the first quarter to rocket to a 22-point lead at the break.
Scoresby looked to rectify its slow start in the second term, placing more scoreboard pressure on the St Albans defence with three straight goals.
However, the Spurs weren’t about to let go of the momentum too easily, hitting back with three goals of their own to make sure the lead was still intact, come the main break.
From there, St Albans’ players dominated, doing as they pleased as Scoresby could manage just one more goal for the rest of the day while the St Albans’ players did as they pleased around the ground.
Only inaccurate kicking in front of the big sticks prevented the margin from ballooning out further with the Spurs claiming the 44-point win, 10.14 (74) to 5.0. (30).
Paxman was a star for St Albans, winning a number of important contests throughout the day and kicking a goal.
She was well supported by Moana Hope, who booted three goals while Rhiannon Banner was the only other multiple goal-scorer with two.
In total, seven Spurs’ players kicked goals in the win.
Saturday’s result lifts the Spurs to second on the Premier Division ladder with a 9-4 win/loss record for the season.
They sit three games behind league pace setters Darebin, who has only been beaten once this year.
St Albans will look to secure its 10th win of the season this week when it takes on the struggling Berwick who are sixth on the ladder.
The news wasn’t as good for the Spurs in the Premier Reserves competition with St Albans going down by one point to Sunbury 3.2 (20) to 2.7 (19).
Haley Sanders and Samantha Radlof were the only goal scorers for the Spurs who are second on the ladder after 13 rounds.
