THE Russian saying ‘do not dig a hole for somebody else; you yourself will fall into it’ was literally proven last Thursday on Altona Beach.
Two excavators used for dredging work at Altona Safe Boat Harbour became stuck in soft sand.
Then Mother Nature intervened, as she does every day, using the moon to raise the water level in the bay.
This was not an unexpected event, but it seems it caught everyone by surprise.
An eyewitness, ‘Peter’ from Altona Boating and Angling Club, watched events unfold.
“They couldn’t get (the excavators) out because it was coming up to high tide,” he said. “The small one went out to try and dig the big one out and as he was digging you could see him sinking.
“Then he got stuck too.
“Two big tow trucks arrived but they couldn’t get them out because the tide was coming in too fast.
“Then I think everyone just gave up.”
