FOR the past 12 years, Doug Knight has dedicated his time to help care for families of ex-servicemen.
Mr Knight is a legatee of Legacy, a voluntary organisation that provides services to Australian families of fallen veterans.
The Caroline Springs resident said he enjoyed giving back to the community and volunteering had always been a part of his life.
“I believe you have to give back. You can’t keep taking all the time,” Mr Knight said.
“Volunteering is something you can do for somebody else to help them in life.”
Mr Knight, 64, said he decided to join Legacy after realising the organisation’s need for more volunteers.
He is now the secretary and co-ordinator of Legacy’s Western Branch and is calling on residents to make a positive contribution and get involved.
“There are many unfortunate people out there that can’t help themselves. They need the help of volunteers,” Mr Knight said.
Mr Knight will be collecting donations and selling badges to raise funds for the organisation during Legacy Week.
He said that the stalls were often ignored by young people.
“People just walk past. They turn the other way and run,” Mr Knight said.
“I would like to see more schools, especially in Caroline Springs, take a more active interest.”
Legacy is calling on the Australian community to show their support for the families of deceased veterans during Legacy week which runs from Sunday 2 September to Saturday 8 September.
