Drink driving charge for woman

A WOMAN was charged with drink driving after her car ploughed into the front yard of a child care facility in Newport last Tuesday.
Police have been told the 49-year-old Altona North woman lost control of her car on Mason Street and veered off the road about 2.30pm.
The car knocked over a guard rail, crashed through a fence and hit a water pipe before side swiping the verandah of the Newport Community Education Centre.
Senior Constable Norman MacDonald at Hobsons Bay Traffic Management Unit said it was extremely lucky that no-one was injured in the incident, which left a damage bill of around $10,000.
“The community centre is also an occasional child care facility, but fortunately the children were playing in the back yard at the time of the collision,” he said.
The woman was issued with three penalty notices and has had her licence suspended for six months.
