HOBSONS Bay City Council has adopted a pedestrian charter as part of the first United Nations Global Road Safety Week.
The charter establishes guidelines for developers and council staff to provide safer roads for pedestrians.
Mayor Leigh Hardinge, executive member of the Road Safe Westgate Road Safety Council, said pedestrian safety wasn’t as well documented as the safety of motorists.
“The Hobsons Bay Pedestrian Charter takes into consideration the safety of pedestrians, including children walking to school, public transport users walking to the station or bus stop, and people with a disability.
“In addition to road safety, the charter emphasises the council’s commitment to the security of pedestrians by working with local police to ensure minimal criminal activity, addresses traffic congestion problems around schools, and advocates for sufficient pedestrian crossing facilities in Hobsons Bay.”
The charter specifies that the council must regularly upgrade its standards and requirements to ensure pedestrian safety.
