10 into 1

HOBSONS Bay City Council is urging residents to “turn 10 bags into one” during the plastic bag exchange program later this week.
The program, which runs until 28 April, aims to encourage residents to swap 10 plastic bags for one reusable bag.
Hobsons Bay mayor Leigh Hardinge said only three per cent of plastic bags in Victoria are recycled.
“If every Hobsons Bay resident said no to one plastic bag each week, we could save four million plastic bags each year,” Cr Hardinge said.
“It’s as easy as bringing 10 plastic bags in to the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre or one of the Hobsons Bay Library branches to exchange for a reusable bag.”
Cr Hardinge said with all the marine life around the area, it was residents’ responsibility to keep plastic bags out of waterways.
The plastic bag exchange program runs for one week every two months, until stocks run out.
The plastic bags will be recycled and used to manufacture products including pipes, bins, bottles, automotive parts, and other products.
To swap bags, head to the following locations:
• Hobsons Bay Civic Centre, 115 Civic Parade, Altona
• All Hobsons Bay Libraries.
• Walker Close Community Centre, 180 Millers Rd, Altona North, on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the exchange week.
