FOUR Hobsons Bay and Wyndham musicians are celebrating after their two bands picked up gongs at an ARIA-style awards ceremony for youth performers.
Members of death metal outfits Detrification and Nosferatu rocked their way to glory at the Kool Skools Awards, each winning a category of the statewide competition.
Detrification won a Special Judges Award for its contribution to the album Evolved and Nosferatu won a Best Metal Award.
Detrification drummer and vocalist Steven Goosens, 17, a Werribee Secondary College student, said the band was “stoked” with the award.
“When they read out our name for a special judges award we were pretty shocked,” he said.
Steven said the band, including bass guitarist Harry Christou, 17, a student at Hoppers Crossing’s Thomas Carr College, guitarist Cory Guala, 17, from Werribee Secondary College, and Vocalist Stevenson Knight, 19, a student at Deakin in Geelong, hoped to release an EP when they finish school at the end of next year.
Nosferatu vocalist Max McCabe, 18, an apprentice plumber from Altona, said the band, whose other four members come from Essendon, was also looking to put out an album next year.
“Last year we won the best metal song category so we were all pretty stoked when we won the best metal band award this year,” Max said.
The awards are run with assistance from Hobsons Bay Youth Services and aim to promote all genres of contemporary music writing and performance.
Hobsons Bay mayor Leigh Hardinge gave the two metal bands the thumbs up.
“I’d especially like to say well done to Detrification and Nosferatu for their success in winning these awards.”
