BRIMBANK City Council will continue to rely on residents to report illegal dumping in the municipality.
General Manager of City Development Stephen Sully said the council had spent $780,000 on the removal of dumped and roadside litter during the last financial year.
Mr Sully said the funds could have been used to provide other council services to Brimbank residents.
“Dumbed rubbish and illegal littering not only looks bad and is bad for the environment but also results in unfair costs to ratepayers,” Mr Sully said.
“Apart from the financial impact of illegal dumping, it is unsightly and can cause health concerns. It is not acceptable and is unfair to the community to dump rubbish and litter.”
Mr Sully said the council had seen large scale dumping of rubbish at industrial estates across North Sunshine and Derrimut.
He said the worst examples included trailer loads of waste that have been dumped on roads and vacant lands.
“Large scale dumping of rubbish particularly in industrial areas means Council has to invest in cleaning programs to keep our streets clean and safe,” Mr Sully said.
Penalties for illegal dumping range from $1200 for an individual and up to $704,000 if the matter goes to court.
Mr Sully said the enforcement and penalising of offenders relies on the support and cooperation of members of the community.
“Please help keep our streets clean and safe by disposing of rubbish and litter respectfully and reporting others who dump illegally.”
