LINE markings on a Williamstown road will go ahead despite an 11th-hour petition signed by almost 500 residents.
The residents oppose linemarking in Victoria St symbolising a shared bicycle and parking lane on both sides of the road.
The solid lines now appear 4.5 metres from the curb, and include bicycle symbols and a new centreline.
Hobsons Bay City Council staff met concerned residents on 13 October, and subsequently it received a petition, dated 22 October, opposing the works.
But works began late in the week of 30 October to provide safe riding for cyclists.
Councillor Leigh Harding said road safety was “paramount”.
“That’s the beginning and end of it all,” he said at a public meeting last Tuesday.
Operation of the shared lanes will be monitored to ensure motorists comply.
