WHEN Irene Georgoulas was a young girl she loved the magical tale of Alice in Wonderland and would listen to the lyrics of its songs over and over.
But only one line from the infamous Walrus and Carpenter stuck in her mind and years later it would become the name of her successful online business.
Cabbages and Kings officially began in 2010, but it was a long journey for the Albion resident who began studying at the Melbourne College of Textiles more than two decades ago.
“It’s what I always dreamed of doing,” Irene said.
After working in her parents’ clothing and manufacturing business and spending time working with designers in Cyprus, she came back to Australia and left the fashion industry to join the corporate world.
But after having her son Basil, Irene’s priorities and interests changed and working 9am to 5pm in a cut throat industry wasn’t an option.
“After having my son, it was like: what do I want to do when I grow up?”
And the answer was clear. Now the 40-year-old spends her days creating unique bathrobes, bed linen and accessories for both girls and boys.
“These were products that I always thought have lacked, particularly for boys.
“I go against the grain and I try to work by the theory that it’s not what you want, it’s what you need.”
Irene said all of her products are made from 100 per cent cotton, handmade and very child-friendly.
She said the response to her Facebook page, where her products are sold, had been overwhelming.
“The response has been humbling. Social media allows customers to offer feedback and online shopping is the way to go for mums.”
Irene also hosts stalls at markets across Melbourne.
