WHY did Altona High School have a ship on its emblem?
This is just one of many questions being asked as students at Altona College, which grew out of the Altona High School, step back in time and research some of the history of the old high school.
Altona High School started classes in 1959 and, according to Altona Laverton Historical Society member Ann Cassar, students at the time were housed in local halls while the building was being built on the Civic Parade site.
“Teachers and students took over the complex from the beginning of the new school year in 1960,” Ms Cassar said.
Today Altona High School and Altona West Primary School have been combined under the leadership of principal Anthony Jones to form Altona College.
Mr Jones said the college was working with the Altona Laverton Historical Society to enable students to create a sense of identity within the community through learning the history of the area, including how Altona College evolved.
Ms Cassar and Mr Jones are urging anyone who can provide information on the history of the school or the mysterious Altona High emblem to contact Altona Laverton Historical Society.
