A $6.5 million redevelopment plan is in the pipeline for the old Williamstown Library.
Acting mayor and Williamstown Ward councillor Angela Altair said the redevelopment of the 40-year-old library would vastly improve the quality and accessibility of its services.
The preliminary concept plans features a 1500sqm library with a mezzanine, casual reading lounges and quiet study areas, a family and history research room, a children’s play area, a cafe and a small office area.
It will have the latest technology and give residents access to more public computers.
“While the Williamstown library has served us well over the past 40 years, it is time to modernise the building so that it will continue to cater to the community’s needs,” Cr Altair said.
“Libraries are a vital community resource providing a range of facilities for the digital age such as internet access in addition to books.
“The redeveloped library will create a focal point for community activity and provide educational support for adults, students and children,” she said.
The preliminary concept plans will be on show at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre, Hobsons Bay libraries and online at www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au from Saturday 9 August to Friday 19 September.
An activity day will be held on Saturday 9 August at the Williamstown library and will include information sessions with the architect. The information sessions will be held in the Williamstown council chamber, 104 Ferguson St, Williamstown, at 10am, 11.30am and 1pm.
Residents are invited to have their say. Details on community consultation opportunities can be obtained via the council’s website or by calling 9932 1000.
