Young artist on the rise

YOUNG Freya Alexander’s artwork has been selected to exhibit at the National Gallery of Victoria’s (NGV) Top Arts: VCE 2010 exhibition.
Now in its 17th year, the exhibition displays 55 works by 53 students from government, Catholic and independent schools from across Victoria.
The Williamstown High School student studied the Year 12 subject as an accelerated course while she was still in Year 11.
Freya said she’s always had an interest in art and it seemed natural to jump straight into it.
Not only was Freya’s work selected in Top Arts but it also received top marks – she received a perfect score of 50 for the subject.
Freya admitted sheepishly that the result was fairly impressive.
“I had an amazing teacher, Miss Voterakis – so I think that helped a lot,” she said.
Six out of eight of the 17-year-olds final artwork was selected to go on show at the NGV.
Freya said she wanted to explore how text can work with a visual image to make a piece of art even more meaningful and have a bigger impact on the audience.
“I’m interested in teenagers and young women and as a bit of a feminist I was interested in communicating the hopes women – using both text and visual elements to capture the essence of young female lives.”
The Year 12 student said she’s honored to be part of the exhibition and for her work to be an inspiration to the 2011 Year 12 art students.
Despite her talent Freya said she is still unsure what direction she will take at the end of her VCE.
“I’m having an inner conflict because I have so many things that I’m interested in,” she said.
“I love photography, writing, design – but I also have an interest in helping people and the environment.
“I’m a bit stuck on what I actually want to do.”
The exhibition opened on 31 March and will run until the 19 June.
